Education & Training

Objective: To advocate for effective, accessible, and culturally appropriate training and educational opportunities that promote CHWs' professional growth and development both as individuals and as a workforce. Core Responsibilities:
  • Meet at least monthly to further the work set out in the committee work plan
  • Make decisions and recommendations regarding education and capacity building to be implemented via ORCHWA committee co-chairs and staff
  • Assure that CHWs statewide are aware of opportunities for professional and personal development
  • Provide training to members in order to build capacity for CHWs to actively engage in advocacy and policy making regarding the profession and its integration into Oregon's health and human service systems
Required Skills:
  • Familiarity with the roles, skills and qualities of CHWs based on personal experience and/or study of CHW literature
  • Experience participating in CHW training, either as a trainee and/or facilitator
  • Familiarity with popular education and/or adult learning
  • Familiarity with and/or connections to the needs and wishes of CHW employers regarding CHW training
  • Familiarity with and/or connections to institutions of higher education, including community colleges and universities

Policy & Advocacy

Objective: To strengthen the CHW workforce through advocacy, policy development, and political education of ORCHWA's membership. Vision: The policy committee will take the lead on advancing ORCHWA's policy priorities. Core Responsibilities:
  • Meet with elected and non-elected decision makers
  • Recruit policy point person from each county/CCO region
  • Maintain CHW awareness of policy and legislative outreach events via presentations, workshops and webinars
  • Participate in ORCHWA's speakers bureau
  • Maintain calendar of legislative events and community meetings
  • Prepare/support members to share their stories, expertise and experiences
  • Set up meetings with elected and non-elected decision makers
  • Assess political education needs of membership
  • Develop and implement political education campaign for ORCHWA members
  • Work collaboratively with communications committee to develop educational materials for policy makers
  • Organize lobby day, legislative presentations, etc
Required Skills:
  • Experience or keen interest in policy and advocacy
  • Public speaking
  • Community organization and mobilization
